CubeCOS 3.1.0 Release

Release overview

CubeCOS 3.1.0 (released February 26, 2026) focuses on expanding storage capabilities and bringing major operational and stability improvements, better lifecycle management, and new internationalization locales.

This release introduces new external storage integration for more scalable storage options, allowing you to leverage the built-in SDS and add existing or new storage appliances. The one-click update and upgrade feature simplifies and accelerates patching operations. CubeCOS now offers a built-in OCI registry for simpler container image management and aligns more closely with cloud-native operations. Detailed node hardware operations and IPMI-based management enhance remote operations and provide greater hardware visibility.

New features

External storage support

External storage support integrates with enterprise storage appliances that have built-in data management and high-performance data delivery via Fibre Channel (FC), iSCSI, and NFS.

  • CubeCOS manages storage provisioning, orchestration, and integration providing a seamless storage integration experience.
  • Manage native and external storage from the same management interface.
  • Leverage storage functions with native storage snapshots, reverts, high availability, and storage thin provisioning.

One-click update and upgrade

Manual cluster lifecycle operations are streamlined by uploading a fix pack or upgrade package, after which lifecycle automation handles the update and upgrade operations.

  • Automation can handle minor and patch update and upgrade processes with minimized downtime.
  • The operation occurs in a rolling manner, upgrading each host in sequence and migrating the VMs from the host.
  • Roll back a broken operation on non-breaking releases to quickly restore node and cluster operations.

Integrated import and migration from other hypervisors

Migrate from other hypervisors using the new migration tool, with integrated backup to protect your data.

  • Import virtual machines (VMs) from other hypervisors, such as VMware, AHV, Hyper-V, and Xen.
  • Drivers and required components for the CubeCOS platform are automatically injected into migrated VMs to provide maximum performance out of the box.

Built-in OCI registry

To better align with cloud-native workloads, CubeCOS now provides a built-in OCI registry powered by Harbor.

  • Provides storage, access, and security for both containers and Helm charts for cloud-native workloads within the CubeCOS cluster.

Advanced node device operations

Manage physical storage device operations from the CubeCOS management interface.

  • View the hardware inventory, monitor the status, and view the storage usage of the physical drive devices.
  • Perform operations on physical drives, such as re-weighting, promoting and demoting disks, and adding or replacing disks.

Node IPMI management

Control the power status of CubeCOS nodes with power-on, power-off, and power-cycle operations.

Create triggers

Provide a flexible way to define how the CubeCOS cluster responds to specific events. Create, edit, and manage custom triggers tailored to specific alert types, severities, or event IDs.

  • Configure responses via email, Slack, or custom scripts.
  • Set custom names and descriptions for triggers for better management.
  • Manage triggers (activate, deactivate, edit, or remove) via the triggers listing table.

Internationalization support

CubeCOS 3.1.0 expands support for internationalization (i18n) by adding the Traditional Chinese (zh-TW) locale. Bigstack continues adding more locales to CubeCOS.

Improvements

GPU

  • Upgraded the Nvidia vGPU Manager driver to v580.105.06 with Fabric Manager.
  • Backported VFIO variant driver framework support for NVIDIA GPU SR-IOV vGPU from the OpenStack Epoxy release.

Compute

  • Enable vTPM support by default without additional configuration.

Network

  • Enable the QoS plugin for network control.

Storage

  • Improved storage stability with better bootstrapping logic and operations.
  • Added enhanced storage management capabilities to the user interface.

Security

  • Added security artifacts, including a software bill of materials (SBOM), software vulnerability scans, and SBOM signing with Cosign.
  • Moved critical service passwords to Kubernetes secrets.
  • Various package updates and security enhancements were included in the update.
  • Restrict access to the httpd server status page.

Compatibility

The following Cube-related products are currently supported by CubeCOS 3.1.0:

  • CubeCMP 2.0 RC5
    • Prerequisites: CubeCOS version 3.0 or later with AppFramework 2.0 deployed.
  • CubeVDI Driver
    • Prerequisites: CubeCOS version 3.0 or later, a CubeVDI Essentials license.

Known issues

  • Instance migration and migration of VMs with disks on block devices from the Fujitsu Eternus DX200 S3 (DX Series) external storage system is not working (issue).
  • Fixpack information remains visible after a major version upgrade in CubeCOS (issue and knowledge base entry).
  • The built-in migration tool will fail when migrating Windows 2025 images due to drive incompatibility (issue).

Feature deprecation and EOL

Management interface

The Horizon management interface is being replaced by the new Skyline interface. Horizon can be accessed at https://<cluster-vip>/horizon, but it will be removed in a future release.

OpenStack Senlin

The Senlin package has been deprecated and removed from CubeCOS. A new management CLI is available to remove remnants from upgraded CubeCOS installations.
